My first visit to John’s Lunch was in 1984, shortly after moving to Halifax. I tried the clams and chips, and my life was forever changed!

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Best fish n chips in Canada, maybe the world.

John’s Lunch – an institution since 1969 – serves the best clams and chips. The coleslaw – which is homemade is superb. They also have an assortment of other seafood dishes. The fish ’n’ chips is really delicious – the best in Canada (you can look it up). The service is top notch. If you come to Dartmouth, head out on Pleasant Street until you get to John’s Lunch. Treat yourself to a heaping plate of deep fried whole clams and a side of slaw. Tell them a long time customer sent you.

I’ve been wanting to go to John’s Lunch for a very long time but it did not work out on any of my other trips to Halifax, so I had very high expectations. The place has character and a small setting but don’t prejudge. Hands down the best seafood in the city I’ve ever had. I like to think of myself as a seafood expert (I live in Digby County). I can’t tell you much more as you just have to go and try it yourself. The waitress was also extremely nice.

We’ve been going there for years. Best food, best service and you sure do get your money’s worth. Love the staff, they always have a smile!

Just had a piece of my hubby’s cold leftover meat and cheese pizza from lunchtime. I had no idea John’s Lunch made pizza but it was amazing. Loaded with really yummy meat and cheese and real strips of bacon at that. The sauce was nice and mild, not overpowering or bitter like some places and the crust was sooo good. I can’t wait to try
it fresh out of the oven sometime.

My brother used to live in Halifax and took us here for a great local experience. We got there just after opening and by the time we left the place was full. We drove by an hour later and there was a line outside. The service was wonderful with happy and welcoming staff. They were proud of their product and happy to talk about the history of the place. The clams are measured out for each order, breaded and fried to order. They are plump, fresh and delicious. We also had the haddock tips that were lightly breaded, fried and delicious. Every meal came with lots of fries but the clams were the stars of the show. This place is well worth getting to if you are staying in Halifax. The meal was delicious and memorable.

Speaking as somebody from out west, this is an excellent place to get a fish and chips, or fried clams. Great feel to the place, very down to earth.

We love the food at John’s Lunch… had the clams and my husband had the seafood platter… so good! We always go there when in town, the service is wonderful. If you're looking for good seafood this is the place (not kidding). If you haven’t made your way there yet what are you waiting for… get going! Truly the best ever, thanks for having us, we’ll be back very soon for round two of the clams, yummmmm!!!!

John’s Lunch is a historic place for me. I ate food there since I was 9 years old and I still eat there. The food is still the same and I love it. The hot sandwiches and the clams and chips, the gravy, the fish, it all still tastes like it did back when I first started eating there, that is why I give it 5 stars… 49 years and still the same great food.

I thought I liked clams. Thought I knew good places for clams… then I ate here. Literally rewrote my history with clams. I have never had good clams til John’s Lunch. All my life when having clams with my mom she would say “not as good as John’s Lunch” I thought she was being picky… I was wrong. I will never ever eat clams anywhere else. Tomorrow I’m bringing my husband.

John's Lunch was our first experience with fish and chips!! We ate there first and since then have tooled around Nova Scotia and Cape Breton for three weeks, eating at several different places and by far the Fish and Chips and Seafood Platter were the best we had anywhere else!! Also, the second time we went to John's, we sat at the counter next to a local who talked to us while he finished up his lunch!! He said he ate there several times a week and it was awesome every time!! He left before we did and when we went to check out, he had already paid for our lunch!! Thanks to John's and the friendly people of Halifax!!

We had heard lots of great things about this place so we finally decided to check it out. We were not disappointed. A really fun, old school type diner. I ordered the fish and chips, they were probably some of the best I ever had. Absolutely delicious. We will definitely be back!
